On Tuesday, November 10, I had a meeting with Dr. Giannino and Ms. Bank addressing some safety concerns that we shared. The meeting was productive and hopefully the recommendations will be followed.
Some of them include establishing a SAVE room at sites that currently do not have them. This initiative is new for our students in alternate assessment programs, and is suppose to be different for our standard assessment program. The goal is to hold ALL students accountable for infractions of the Student Code of Discipline.
Our administrator should be informing you about proper procedures for student removal and/or suspension. In addition, you should be aware of evacuation procedures, as well. Staff who are responsible for toileting and diapering students should soon receive proper training and direction on how to safely perform those duties.
Safety has and continues to be a priority for the UFT. If there is safety issue that exists at your site, you should e-mail ASAP so it could be addressed. There should always be a student removal procedure in place so that teachers may effectively and safely deliver instruction. All suggestions are welcomed!
Is safety a concern at your site?
